Speaking to D23 Magazine, Feige said that the storyline for the Captain America follow-up will take the action away from the World War II setting and into the present day.
"Thor will go off into a new adventure, and Captain America will continue to explore the modern world in another film of his own," he commented.
Thor opens on April 27, while Captain America hits cinemas in July. The characters will then unite with Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo's Hulk and Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye for Marvel ensemble film The Avengers in 2012.
Feige added that he wants The Avengers to provide a launching pad for more Marvel movie spinoffs.
"We hope that holds true for the characters appearing in that film - Black Widow, Hawkeye and the spy organisation, S.H.I.E.L.D. - all of whom are more than worthy and capable of carrying their own films," he explained.
