According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has hired Chris Morgan - who penned the third, fourth and fifth Fast and the Furious entries - to write the script for Fast Six.
Universal co-chairman Donna Langley praised Morgan for playing an "integral" role in the Vin Diesel-led series.
Fast & Furious 5 sees Diesel's Dom Toretto and Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner on the run from federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson). Series veterans Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Sung Kang also star in the action film.
Fast & Furious 5 opens in the UK tomorrow and in the US on April 29.
