The project is expected to mark the Back to the Future helmer's return to live-action films after the box office failure of motion-capture movie Mars Needs Moms.
According to Deadline, the script by John Gatins focuses on the tale of a pilot who heroically lands a troubled aircraft, only for an investigation to uncover that he had taken drugs before getting into the cockpit.
Zemeckis's last live-action box office success was Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks.
The director is currently preparing to helm Gnome Attack. He has also been attached to the live-action time travel film Timeless.
