Speaking to ComingSoon, the actor, who portrayed the character in 2009's X-men Origins: Wolverine, said that talk of the project has died down.
"There were strong rumours a while ago, but I haven't heard or seen anything tangible anyways," he told the website.
Kitsch went on to say that if the movie does get greenlit, it will likely be "down the road". He added that he would like the film to have a darker tone than Wolverine.
"I know if we do it, it'll probably be down the road and we'll do it hopefully a lot darker," he said. "I'd love to play him again, but it's a matter of doing it right, too. There's no point in just doing it for the sake of doing it. You gotta kill if you're going to do it, so we'll see."
Twentieth Century Fox is yet to confirm a Gambit solo outing. The studio's next X-Men film X-Men: First Class arrives in cinemas in June.
