The Scream 4 actress confessed that she is tired of playing teenage characters, and wants to pursue projects which allow for more depth and development.
"I'm getting to the age where I don't want to play high school anymore," she told Las Vegas magazine.
"I feel like I'm finally getting to that place where I can play those in-their-early-20s roles, which are the ones you can really sink your teeth into. I still have to get over that hump of being seen as the cheerleader - and as very, very, young."
Panettiere is best known for her roles in Bring It On: All Or Nothing, as well as the NBC series Heroes.
She previously expressed interest in reprising her role as Claire Bennet in a film adaptation of Heroes.
She can next be seen in Downers Grove, a drama written by novelist Bret Easton Ellis.
