Japanese cinemas showing new Colin Farrell film The New World will pioneer the use of smell-o-vision.

The adventure movie is due for release in the country later this year, and a telecommunications company will provide theatres with the technology to pump odors during showings.

NTT Communications Corp plans to provide seven different smells to synchronise with different scenes. Flowery will accompany a love scene, orange and grapefruit will go with joy, peppermint and rosemary will prevail during emotional parts and anger will come with a mix of eucalyptus and tea tree.

The smells are emitted by machines under seats in the back rows of cinemas which mix different amounts of oils. Sequences for different films will in future be available for download, the manufacturer said.

A $620 home version of the machine is already available from NTT, with the ability to work with films or work as aromatherapy.
