According to Deadline, the Oscar winner could star alongside Ryan Reynolds in the Universal film project.
Zach Galifianakis was previously attached to the second lead role in the movie, but the comedian has since dropped out of the feature.
R.I.P.D. is based on a Dark Horse comic book of the same name written by Peter M. Lenkov.
R.I.P.D. stands for Rest In Peace Department, and the comic centres on a police force full of ghosts who battle unhinged spirits.
Reynolds was previously cast in the lead role of Nick Cruz, a dead police officer who joins the R.I.P.D. Bridges is circling the role of Cruz's Old West-style gunslinging partner.
Bridges, who won an Oscar playing a musician in the 2009 drama Crazy Heart, will release a country music album this summer on Blue Note Records.
The actor will also join Julianne Moore in The Seventh Son, the first movie adaptation of the children's fantasy book series The Spook's Apprentice.
