'Thor' star praises film's female roles

Thor star Kat Dennings has said that the Marvel Studios film will appeal to women as well as men because of the amount of strong female characters in the movie.

Dennings, who plays Darcy in Kenneth Branagh's comic book adaptation, revealed that the women in the film are presented as capable characters in their own right.

"There is a pretty great female presence in the film, with Jane Foster and Darcy and Sif also, and Frigga, Thor's mother," Dennings explained to Comic Book Movie.

Because Darcy is an original creation designed specifically for the film, Dennings admitted that it was much easier to prepare for the role.

"I sort of felt for me anyway, that I should sort of view the script as its own thing and now try to compare and contrast the previous stuff, and just treat it like its own little universe," she said, when asked if she had read many Thor comics to prepare for the film.

"And Darcy wasn't in the comics, so I didn't have to worry about continuity or anything like that," the actress added.

Dennings recently praised the film's star Chris Hemsworth for his portrayal of the God of Thunder, insisting that he was "perfect" in the role.

Thor was released in cinemas in the UK this weekend, and will launch in the US on Friday.
