Barry Levinson has signed to direct the forthcoming mob family biopic Gotti: Three Generations.

Nick Cassavetes, who was originally attached to helm the project, left the film last month due to scheduling conflicts.

John Travolta and Lindsay Lohan are signed to star in the project. Travolta will portray John Gotti Jr, while Lohan will play John Gotti Jr's wife Kim.

Joe Pesci is also attached to the film in the role of Angelo Ruggiero.

Leo Rossi scripted the movie, which will centre on the relationship between Gotti and his sons as they lead the Gambino crime family.

Travolta recently called the Gotti family's story the "most interesting untold story in this country".

The actor also revealed that he felt a "beautiful love" for the Gotti family after spending time with them.

Speaking about the project last month, Lohan said, "I think it's such an iconic story. I think it's a great story to be told. I'm honoured to be working with John Travolta and Joe Pesci."
