The actor, who starred in Oscar-winning drama American Beauty with Kevin Spacey, will take on the role of Seneca Crane, the head game-maker of the film's eponymous Hunger Games.
He joins other confirmed castings Jennifer Lawrence, Elizabeth Banks, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth in the movie, which is an adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel series of the same name.
The plot will see heroine Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson) pitted against fellow teens in a battle for survival.
Lionsgate's big-screen version of The Hunger Games will be directed by Gary Ross and is scheduled for a March 23, 2012 release.
