The actress plays a teacher at a Kenyan school who helps an 84-year old man to learn to read and write in the face of local opposition from parents wanting their children to take places at new free schools after independence.
Speaking to Collider, Harris said: "It is great to be a part of big-budget movies, but it is harder to feel like you are contributing, in the sense that it has such big machinery behind it.
"In a little movie like this... we really felt like we were immersing ourselves in the culture and the community, and we were much more collaborative."
Harris's most high-profile films so far have been Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men's Chest and its sequel At World's End.
She was also recently rumoured to be in line for the female lead in the adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower.
