The Harry Potter star, who will be seen in the thriller The Woman in Black next year, explained that he feels misunderstood.
He told Total Film: "I do tend to play quite sad characters. I don't know why - I'm quite happy!
"When I was 11, Chris Columbus said he thought I had sad eyes. I think that's largely the reason I play such sad lonely characters!"
However, Radcliffe insisted that he doesn't mind playing miserable characters as he finds it interesting.
Discussing his Woman in Black character Arthur Kipps, he added: "Arthur is grieving, numb and exhausted and I think it's a struggle for him to get out of bed in the morning.
"That was definitely something that I focused on - that sense of exhaustion and numbness - and it's very useful because it just gives you a slightly different physicality."
