The sequel has gone through several rounds of stalled negotiations, leading Ferrell to say that while it could still happen, fans should not get their hopes up as it is unlikely that the film will get made.
In an interview with PopEater, the actor and star of the 2004 comedy expressed his frustration at the lack of progress made on the follow-up as there has been considerable interest from the public.
"Yeah, I don't understand how [Paramount] conduct their business. It's funny I think they... actually I don't know what they think," he said. "Once again, they don't comment either way but it's not like it's coming from us unsolicited... We try to explain there's so much interest in a sequel, we're not making this up!"
Ferrell went on to reveal that he may reteam with John C. Reilly for a follow-up to his Sony Pictures comedy Step Brothers in the near future.
"We've had a wonderful working relationship with [Sony]. We might do it. We're talking about trying to potentially do it," he said.
"We're just kind of two kindred souls. We were probably brothers in a past life. We just kind of click with our comedic sensibility. It really comes down to the basic thing of thinking the same thing is funny and we totally do."
Ferrell was recently announced as the recipient of the 2011 Mark Twain Prize for American Comedy.
