Jack Black has signed up to Michael Winterbottom's forthcoming comedy Bailout.

The feature film will see the actor playing a near-bankrupt man who tries to salvage his finances through drug-dealing after he meets a pair of down-and-outs in a supermarket, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Jess Walter penned the script from her novel The Financial Lives of the Poets.

Black will next be seen in Bernie, taking on the role of a mortician who has to pretend that a woman he kills by accident is still alive.

The actor recently had a pilot about a writer called My Life as an Experiment picked up by US channel NBC.

Brit director Winterbottom's past work has included 24 Hour Party People, The Killer Inside Me and A Mighty Heart.
