The actor was asked at the Cannes press conference forthe Disney franchise's fourth instalment On Stranger Tides how many more times he might play the lead role of Captain Jack Sparrow.
Depp said: "How many more - how many more Captain Jacks? If you are surrounded by such an amazing and creative force such as [producer] Jerry [Bruckheimer], such as [director] Rob [Marshall], such as strong actors like these guys - I think the possibilities are endless.
"Really, ultimately and truly, these films are made for the people. It's the people who go and pay their hard-earned money to see these things. If the people get tired of it or something - that's when it stops, I think.
"When the process becomes impure - if the process becomes impure - if you're doing it for the wrong reasons - and I know everybody up here is doing it for the right reasons - it's not
just all about the kerching kerching."
He added: "Some people lose sight of the fact that it is the movie business. If a lot of money is spent on making a film then certainly whoever spent that money expects to make a return on it.
"But that's not the reason why we dove in to it. That's not the reason why we go in and make asses of ourself. We do that for the people. So as long as the people want it, I'm there."
