The pair, who first collaborated on the 2001 film Blow, are reunited as rival pirates in Rob Marshall's 3D adventure sequel.
"With Johnny I worked before almost 12 years ago, it was about time that someone put us together again because we had so much fun working together," Cruz said at the On Stranger Tides Cannes Film Festival press conference.
"I have so much respect for him, his level of creativity is so high and free and inspiring. He's a really unique human being, a unique artist. You feel very lucky to be around him. He's inspiring in every single way. I hope we get to do it many, many more times."
Depp described Cruz as "an amazing person, a great woman and a great friend" and admitted that he enjoyed the challenge of acting with her.
"In the context of the work, when you get into the ring with her, whatever you might throw out to her, she's going to grab it back and chuck it out in some obtuse direction," he explained. "Then she'll throw a few things herself that keep you on your toes. She's an incredible talent and I'd do [all my movies] with her if she'd let me."
