Michelle Williams has signed up to play Glinda the Good Witch in Sam Raimi's Oz, the Great and Powerful.

The actress joins Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz - committed to the roles of the scorned and evil sisters respectively - who cross paths with the wizard after he lands in the Emerald City, Variety reports.

James Franco is to star as the slimy salesman-turned-wizard who causes trouble between the sisters.

The prequel to the classic 1939 film aims to uncover the story behind the sisters' rivalries and the wizard's arrival before the typhoon that brings Dorothy to Oz.

Helmer Raimi was reportedly keen on Hilary Swank to take on the role of the Evil Witch in the earlier stages, while Disney wanted Williams.
