Speaking at a Cannes press conference, the Tree of Life star said that he favours movies with "depth" and ones that make him laugh.
"It was about ten years ago when I started thinking about my favourite films and they weren't commercial things, they were things that had a little more depth or asking bigger questions," he said.
"Or, they were really, really funny. I do like a comedy, there's some great comedy coming out of America right now. I'm thinking of Zach Galifianakis, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride, I like that too."
Pitt joked that he isn't averse to blockbuster projects, adding: "Don't count me out on Mission: Impossible! I'll be there, I'm not that highbrow."
The Tree of Life is currently screening in-competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It is Terrence Malick's first film since 2005's The New World.
