Universal apparently told Berg that it would fund Lone Survivor if he agreed to direct the adaptation of the classic game Battleship, which is due for release next year.
Lone Survivor gives Marcus Luttrell's account of returning alone from a command to find Osama Bin Laden without his three Navy Seal colleagues, who were killed by the Taliban during the reconnaissance.
The studio apparently pushed for the film following the official announcement of Bin Laden's death.
Taylor Kitsch is in talks to play one of the Seals in the film, Collider reports.
Speaking to the site, Berg said: "Bin Laden's death has cleared the way for this, a movie that will be an unapologetically patriotic film that honours and pays homage to an incredible group of badass guys who do this."
