Organisers promised a reflective and eclectic lineup as they launched the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City earlier today.
The festival, which formally begins tomorrow (Tuesday) with the premiere of 9/11 plane drama United 93, was established in 2002 as a response to the economic impact of the 9/11 attacks in downtown Manhattan. This year's program features a record 274 selected films, including 96 world premieres and the gala premieres of Mission: Impossible 3 and Poseidon.
Festival founder Jane Rosenthal described the opening night movie choice as a "deeply personal decision" while co-founder Robert De Niro said that it "would seem strange" to launch the festival in any other way.
"This year we have an occasion to reflect upon our beginnings," added Rosenthal, "and remain true to our mission to bring filmmakers and their films to the widest possible audience."
Meanwhile, actors Ed Burns, Laurence Fishburne and Josh Lucas were announced as jurors for the competitive categories. Other panel members include Trudie Styler, Moby, Wyclef Jean, Samantha Morton and Whoopi Goldberg.
