In an interview with Screen Crave, the Alice in Wonderland star said that he continues to be amazed by the attention that the Pirates of the Caribbean character has received.
When asked what it is like to play a character that is beloved by so many people, Depp said: "It's pretty psychedelic, actually. Yeah, I supposed you could make it even more psychedelic but we probably shouldn't go into that now but, yeah, the idea of wondering through this ride and suddenly there you are three times.
"It's quite an honour in a weird way. It's a great honour. Some sort of thing that you took part in creating becomes this forever sort of object."
The actor will play Sparrow for the fourth time in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The film also stars Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane.
Depp recently described himself as a "middle-aged child", claiming that he is attracted to story-book films because he is young at heart.
The 47-year-old actor has said that he is unsure about joining a fifth instalment of the Pirates movies.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens in UK cinemas today, and in the US on May 20.
