The Secretary star will play a nanny to a young boy who is spooked by voices coming from the walls in their remote house in the Italian countryside, says Variety.
After becoming romantically involved with his father, she also becomes subject to the malevolent forces haunting the property.
Eric Howell, who performed stunts in Mall Rats, will direct the paranormal shocker, which has been adapted from a novel by Silvio Raffo.
Gyllenhaal will next be seen in Hysteria, which chronicles the invention of the vibrator and co-stars British actor Rupert Everett.
Her brother Jake Gyllenhaal said last year that he is not interested in appearing in another film with Maggie.
