Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier sparked controversy at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday when he joked about being a Nazi and claimed that he could "understand" Adolf Hitler.
The Melancholia director's comments prompted Cannes organisers to ask for an explanation. Von Trier issued an apology, but was today banned from the festival. Should Melancholia win the Palme d'Or this Sunday he will not be allowed to collect the prize in person.
