The new version from Screen Gems and MGM will go back to the 1974 novel by Stephen King, Deadline reports.
Aguirre-Sacasa previously penned the graphic novelisation of the prolific writer's novel The Stand.
Sissy Spacek stars in the 1976 film adaptation as the bullied teenage girl who unleashes her telekinetic powers on her victimisers after they soak her in pig's blood at the high school prom.
Since then, there has been a failed Broadway musical based on the book and a 2002 television version.
Aguirre-Sacasa has been drafted in to revive the Spider-Man-inspired musical and will also be writing for Glee's next season.
