While Cruise had been circling a role in the film for a while, the actor finally agreed terms to play the lead role on Friday.
The project was acquired from Disney by Universal Pictures, who have now handed Kosinski a budget of $100 million.
Set in a post-apocalyptic future, Oblivion casts Cruise as a lone soldier on Earth, tasked with repairing drones to help fight off an alien race who have taken over the planet's surface.
With humanity forced to live away from the surface in the clouds, Cruise's character encounters a woman who crash lands and needs his protection.
Cruise is set to begin work on the musical Rock of Ages this summer, after completing work on the next instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise.
Production on Oblivion is due to begin in October.
