Following rumours at the start of the month that the 'Fly Away' musician was in contention for a part, the studio has now confirmed that he will play the role of Cinna.
Director Gary Ross said: "When I saw Lenny's work in Precious, I was just knocked out. It was quiet and strong and understated and open-hearted; all qualities which define this character. I'm really looking forward to this ride."
Cinna is a stylist who works for Katniss Everdeen in the lead-up to the Hunger Games.
Kravitz, who is a multiple Grammy award winner, has also appeared in movies including The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Zoolander. He received an NAACP Image Award nomination last year for his role in Precious.
He will also play civil rights pioneer Andrew Young in Lee Daniels's forthcoming movie Selma and releases his ninth studio album Black and White America later this year.
The Hunger Games, which stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, is due to open in US and UK cinemas on March 23, 2012.
