Director Timur Bekmambetov has hinted that there could be a follow-up to the 2008 film about a fed-up office worker who discovers he has inherited his father's assassin skills.
Speaking to MTV, he said: "The reality is we love [Jolie] and we'd love to do it with her, but also that story has such a big idea behind it that it can also go on without her."
He added that there had been discussion about making the second film because the idea remained "very interesting".
Bekmambetov is currently working on the adaptation of the mashup novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which stars Benjamin Walker in the titular role. Rufus Sewell and Dominic Cooper also feature in the film.
Jolie admitted last year that one of the chief attractions of the role was acting alongside James McAvoy.
