Speaking to Entertainment Tonight Canada, the Social Network actor, who plays FBI director and Hoover's (DiCaprio) rumoured gay lover Clyde Toulson in the film, confessed that he did not mind the experience and finds gay content in film to be sensationalised.
"You've just got to go for it. It wasn't that weird. I have never kissed a guy - it's not something I'm going to do in my private life, but at the end of it I was, like, 'Man, there is a lot of weird hype'," he explained.
However, while Hammer said that his time with DiCaprio on set allowed the pair to form a "special relationship", he claimed that they have not stayed in touch since, adding: "You always have a special relationship with someone when you finish a movie with them, but... he's got a bunch of stuff he is doing after that, I've got a bunch of stuff I'm doing... we didn't start a book club together or anything."
Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar also stars Naomi Watts, Judi Dench, Charlize Theron, Josh Lucas and Jeffrey Donovan.
Hammer was recently confirmed for the title role in Disney's upcoming reboot of The Lone Ranger.
