Dark Shadows is based on a 1960s supernatural soap opera about a dysfunctional family headed by a 200-year-old vampire, to be played by Johnny Depp.
The director's Alice in Wonderland broke the UK box office record for a 3D film, collecting £10 million on its opening weekend last year and surpassing Avatar's returns.
"There's people like, 'Everything's gonna be in 3D', or 'I hate 3D!' I think people should have a choice," Burton told The Wrap.
"I don't think it should be forced on anybody. At the same time, it's great, some of it."
Burton added that his upcoming animated project Frankenweenie, an extended version of an early short, will be in 3D.
Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton and Catherine O'Hara, who starred in his 1988 movie Beetlejuice, will appear in Frankenweenie.
Dark Shadows will hit cinemas on May 11, 2012.
