Mental centres on the daily life of a family and their "crazy, but charismatic nanny", Variety reports.
Hogan will be making his first Australian film since moving to Hollywood to direct My Best Friend's Wedding and the chicklit adaptation Confessions of a Shopaholic.
Screen Australia confirmed on Monday that it will be backing the production.
Collette reportedly planned to move back to her native Australia after the birth of her second child last year.
The actress, whose series United States of Tara has just been axed in the US, will next be seen in the remake of the 1985 cult film Fright Night.
