Movie studio Sony reportedly insisted on Murray's involvement for Ghostbusters 3 to go forward, but Murray told radio host Howard Stern in February that he hadn't yet read writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg's screenplay.
Aykroyd has now weighed in on a possible third Ghostbusters feature, affirming his hope that Murray can be swayed into reprising his role of Dr Peter Venkman.
"We hope to make the movie with Bill Murray. That's where we're standing… I'm in," he told Access Hollywood.
"There's a great story to be told. The promise of the new movie is handing the torch to the young because, you know, [the original Ghostbusters] Ray and Winston and Egon and Peter Venkman, we're a little taxed physically now. We can't be frontline operators anymore so we need the youth!"
Fellow Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson recently admitted that he has "no idea" if the proposed sequel will ever get off the ground, adding: "I'm not waiting for it, but I'd love to see it happen. I think it's great."
