Donald Sutherland cast in 'Hunger Games'

Donald Sutherland has been cast as one of the main villains in The Hunger Games.

Sutherland has officially joined the adaptation of Suzanne Collins's teen series as President Snow, Lionsgate has confirmed.

The character rules Panem and is seen as the main controlling influence behind most of the series' more important events.

The actor will now join an ensemble cast which includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Wes Bentley, Lenny Kravitz and Toby Jones.

Lawrence, who portrays series protagonist Katniss Everdeen, recently defended her co-stars Hutcherson and Hemsworth, claiming that they will be perfect as Everdeen's two love interests Gale and Peeta.

The Hunger Games is currently expected in cinemas on March 23, 2012.
