The Blue Valentine actress confessed that while she has tended to embody more serious characters in recent years, she is interested in pursuing projects which allow her to tap into a different personality type in the future.
"It wasn't anything premeditated at all. I guess it was just what my subconscious was interested in exploring for the last couple of years," she told The Arizona Republic.
"I've heard enough now in the past few months from people I respect, from friends and strangers on the street, saying, like, 'Could you do something not as harrowing?' And actually, I think there's something to that - I'm interested myself in what else would excite me."
Williams previously said that she enjoys challenging film roles and would never turn down the opportunity to play a complex character.
Williams recently signed on for the role of Glinda the Good Witch in Sam Raimi's upcoming Wizard of Oz prequel.
