Lionsgate has announced that it hopes to divide the three novels that make up Suzanne Collins's Hunger Games trilogy - The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay - into four films, according to Deadline.
At the Cannes Film Festival, Lionsgate COO Joe Drake said that The Hunger Games could become an "outsized success" for the studio, stating that it was "the highest-selling film [Lionsgate] ever had".
The first book in the trilogy is currently being filmed in North Carolina. It stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci and Elizabeth Banks.
In addition, Donald Sutherland has joined the cast of the highly-anticipated adaptation as the villainous President Snow.
Lawrence, who plays the protagonist Katniss Everdeen, recently defended the casting of Hutcherson and Hemsworth, claiming they are the perfect love interests for her character.
The Hunger Games is currently expected in cinemas on March 23, 2012.
