Sheen spoke to the Los Angeles Times about his wide range of roles, admitting that he elects to participate in a film only if it appeals to him.
"I suppose [the range] reflects my taste as an audience member," said Sheen. "I'm as likely when I'm deciding what film I want to watch to go to the small art-house cinema as I am to go to the big multiplex."
The Midnight in Paris actor continued: "And I don't see why my acting career shouldn't reflect my taste as well. I do things that I would like to go see ultimately. They're all things that I'd like to watch myself, and therefore I should like to be in them."
Sheen recently revealed that he loved filming Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris on location in the French capital, asserting that making the movie was not "like work".
The 42-year-old is currently dating his Midnight in Paris co-star Rachel McAdams. The couple made their first public appearance at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Sheen can be seen next in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, in US and UK cinemas on November 18.
