Robert Zemeckis has reportedly committed to making his first live-action film since 2000's Castaway.

Flight will centre on a pilot who is honoured for his extraordinary bravery in landing a plane but who struggles with the knowledge that his alcoholism was responsible for the near-fatal accident, according to 24 Frames.

The Back to the Future helmer has focused on animated projects in the past decade, including Polar Express, Beowulf and A Christmas Carol.

Since the US box office failure of Mars Needs Mums, he has been attached to a number of projects, including a scrapped remake of the Beatles' film Yellow Submarine.

He was also reportedly considering an adaptation of Ken Grimwood's novel Replay in which a middle-aged man who experiences a heart attack wakes up again as an 18-year old and gets the chance to change his life.
