Predator producer John Davis spoke to Collider about the film franchise, revealing that Schwarzenegger almost participated in the 1990 sequel to the original 1987 movie.
"We should've had Arnold in the movie," said Davis. "The deal broke down over $250,000 (£153,000), which is a shame."
Instead, the film starred Danny Glover and Gary Busey.
The former California governor separated from his wife of 25 years Maria Shriver last month after admitting to fathering a secret love child with a member of his household staff.
Schwarzenegger subsequently put his film career on hold in order to focus on his family.
A fifth Terminator film was among the many movies to which Schwarzenegger had committed prior to his scandal. However, it now appears that the actor will not be the male lead in the movie, though he will still be featured.
Terminator 5 is currently at the development stage and slated for a 2014 release.
