In March, director David O. Russell revealed that he would like to write the sequel, declaring that it would focus on boxer Micky Ward's famed battles with Arturo Gatti.
While attending the 2011 Spike TV Guys Choice Awards, Wahlberg was awarded the prize for 'Guy Movie Of The Year' for The Fighter. In his acceptance speech, he announced that a sequel to the Oscar-winning film is in the works.
"We left out the Arturo Gatti fights for a reason," Wahlberg said. "Because that's for The Fighter 2. We're not going to do Fighter 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 but we are going to do 2, and we're going to do the Ward-Gatti trilogy."
Ward had three fights with Gatti that took place between 2002 and 2003. Each of the fights was so brutal that the two boxers ended up in the hospital following the matches.
Wahlberg previously said that a sequel to The Fighter was not a given, explaining that the follow-up is in its early stages.
