The Never Let Me Go director was reportedly shortlisted with Duncan Jones, Fast & Furious 5's Justin Lin and Bourne Identity's Doug Liman.
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Romanek said: "That's just one of those stories that floated around. I was on their list, I received the script months ago. It didn't seem like my kind of thing.
"That script was a terrific version of that kind of thing, but not something I felt really passionate about."
Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky departed from the production in March because it would have meant spending too much time away from his family.
Hugh Jackman will reprise his title role in the follow-up to X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Romanek's latest movie Never Let Me Go, starring Andrew Garfield, Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, is available on Blu-ray and DVD in the US now and will be released in the UK on June 27.
