Abrams explained that he hoped to retain a sense of mystery when editing the preview clip for Super 8, telling Entertainment Tonight that key twists and cliffhangers shouldn't be given away for free.
"It drives me crazy when you see a trailer for a movie and it's over and you're like, 'Well, I don't have to see the movie anymore. I just saw everything'," the filmmaker insisted.
He continued: "So part of the fun [in the Super 8 trailer] was trying to show people kind of what the feeling of the movie was, give them the sense of what happens - this thing that escapes from the train car - and yet not say everything and not give every detail away so the audience can actually have a fun surprise when they go see the movie."
The helmer revealed earlier this week that Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy has a surprise role in Super 8.
Abrams also said that he thoroughly enjoyed working with three-time Oscar winner Steven Spielberg on the film.
Super 8 is now playing in US cinemas and opens on August 5 in the UK.
