The original Dark Horse graphic novel centres on cats and dogs living in a fictional place called Burden Hill, which team up together to solve crimes and keep their neighbourhoods safe.
The Eisner Award-winning publication was created by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson.
According to Heat Vision, the CGI film will be produced by Dark Horse's Mike Richardson and Aron Warner.
Adamson also directed the first two Chronicles of Narnia films, but has most recently been attached to the live action film and Hugh Laurie vehicle Mr Pip.
Mr Pip is about the relationship between a teacher in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea who inspires his young pupils with his reading of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.
Three forthcoming issues of the anthology Dark Horse Presents will feature new Beasts of Burden stories. Dorkin promised that they "can be easily followed by folks who haven't read the previous comics".
