Quentin Tarantino's new movie Django Unchained will open in cinemas on December 25, 2012.

The Weinstein Company-released Western is currently the only major film occupying the Christmas Day release slot for next year.

Django Unchained revolves around a freed slave who teams up with German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz to save his wife from plantation owner Calvin Candle.

The role of Django is yet to be cast, although Jamie Foxx and Will Smith have both been rumoured for the role.

Tarantino's Oscar-winning Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz will play Schultz, while Leonardo DiCaprio has allegedly signed up to star as the villainous Candle.

Samuel L. Jackson, who starred in Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Kill Bill, Vol. 2, is also expected to have a role in Django Unchained.
