Sean Penn to direct 'The Comedian'

Sean Penn has reportedly signed on to direct The Comedian.

Martin Scorsese was previously believed to be helming the Robert De Niro film that follows an ageing stand-up comic. However, according to the New York Post, these reports were erroneous and Penn is expected to direct the feature instead.

Penn previously directed the critically-acclaimed Into the Wild, which starred Emile Hirsch, Marcia Gay Harden, Jena Malone and William Hurt.

The Milk star recently split from actress Scarlett Johansson after three months of dating. Penn reportedly was not interested in a serious relationship.

Penn reunited with his Fast Times at Ridgemont High cast for Spike TV's Guys Choice Awards earlier this month. The film was inducted into the Guy Movie Hall of Fame.

The Comedian is scheduled to go into production next year.
