The Gladiator actor is in talks to play Superman's (Henry Cavill) biological father Jor-El, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sean Penn and Clive Owen were apparently under consideration for the part as well.
Marlon Brando previously played the role in 1978's Superman.
Man of Steel also stars Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Amy Adams and Michael Shannon. It is being produced by Christopher Nolan.
Crowe recently caused a controversy when he used Twitter to speak out against the practice of circumcision, calling it "barbaric" and "stupid".
Inglourious Basterds star Eli Roth came to the 47-year-old's defence, explaining that the actor was just making a joke to him.
Production on Man of Steel is expected to start in late summer or early fall of this year.
Man of Steel is scheduled to open in cinemas in 2012.
