The 27-year-old has been signed to Ben Nott and Morgan O'Neill's sporting picture after impressing with his portrayal of villainous vampire Riley in Twilight sequel Eclipse.
Samuel will take on the role of surfing enthusiast Jimmy Fisher in the Australia-filmed project, which tells the true story of two brothers' attempt to kick-start a business out of the pastime.
Avatar actor Sam Worthington earlier joined Drift as a photographer who helps surfing become a global industry, while Perth-born actor Myles Pollard has been cast as the other Fisher brother.
Worthington said upon his signing: "There's something pure and true about surfing, and there is something pure and true about this script."
Production on Drift is scheduled to begin next year in West Australia.
