More than 8,000 people lined up to apply for work as extras portraying prisoners, victims, criminals, police officers, businesspeople and sports fans, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
"I think there has been a very good turnout for this movie that fit the categories that we were looking for," said Tammy Smith of LA-based casting agency Smith & Webster-Davis Casting.
Approximately 3,000 extras are needed for The Dark Knight Rises, which began filming in London last month. Other footage was shot on location in Jodhpur, India.
The movie sees Christian Bale reprise his dual role as Batman and Bruce Wayne for a third and reportedly final time. He is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight Rises is due for release on July 20, 2012.
