Ed Helms' facial tattoo in The Hangover: Part II will not have to be digitally altered for the film's DVD release following a settlement over its copyright.

Designer S. Victor Whitmill had claimed that the tattoo infringed copyright on a design that he had created especially for boxer Mike Tyson.

Warner Bros. settled the case after a US federal judge said that there was "merit" in the accusations, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The studio had planned to digitally remove the tattoo from Helms' face if the artists' case was successful.

Whitmill's lawyer told the site: "Warner Bros. and Mr. Whitmill have amicably resolved their dispute. No other information will be provided."

It is thought that Helms' tattoo in the follow-up is inspired by Tyson's cameo in the first film.

Helms and co-star Bradley Cooper almost missed a scheduled appearance on The Graham Norton Show last month when volcanic ash disrupted flight schedules across Europe.
