The actress's role remains under wraps, but the film centres on a fraught partnership between detective McAvoy and a criminal who both face being trapped in the same political conspiracy plot, according to Variety.
Mark Strong will play the second male lead in the film, which is to be directed by Shifty helmer Eran Creevy.
Riseborough has been attached to a number of projects since appearing in Rowan Joffe's remake of the classic Brighton Rock.
She will appear next as Wallis Simpson in Madonna's retelling of the Wallis Simpson story W.E., which is due out in the US this December.
The Tudors actress Natalie Dormer also stars in the movie as Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, mother to Queen Elizabeth II.
Riseborough has also been cast in Joe Strong's adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina.
Welcome to the Punch is currently in pre-production and due for release next year.
