Based on Beau Willimon's play Farragut North, the film stars Clooney as a governor with his eyes on the White House and Ryan Gosling as his press spokesman who gets drawn into political corruption.
Ides of March, co-starring Marisa Tomei, Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman, will get its world premiere at the Italian festival on August 31.
Ides of March is Clooney's fourth film as a director after Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Good Night, and Good Luck and Leatherheads.
Good Night, and Good Luck was nominated for the prestigious 'Golden Lion' award when it screened at Venice in 2005. Clooney and Grant Heslov's The Men Who Stare at Goats premiered at the festival in 2009.
Madonna's upcoming royal drama W.E. is also rumoured to be one of the high-profile movies bowing at Venice this year.
The Ides of March is due for release in the US on October 7 and in the UK on October 28.
