The British actor played plumber Mario in 1993's big screen spinoff of the Nintendo video game. The movie flopped at the box office, making just $20 million worldwide, and opened to scathing reviews from critics.
When asked to name his "worst job", "biggest disappointment" and the one thing he'd like to change about his past in an interview with The Guardian, Hoskins answered each question with Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. passed through the hands of three directors - Rocky Morton, Annabel Jankel and Roland Joffé - during its troubled production.
It starred John Leguizamo as Mario's brother Luigi, Samantha Mathis as Princess Daisy and Dennis Hopper as villain King Koopa.
A Nintendo Power article exploring the legacy of Mario dismissed the movie, saying: "Yes it happened. Let us speak no more of it."
